DialogueCanadian ownership: unknown

Sun Life took its stake in Montreal's Dialogue from 23% to 95%

Sun Life increased its interest in Dialogue from about 22.6% to approximately 95% on the October 3, 2023 completion. Minority ownership remained outstanding at that time.

What this means for Canadian ownership

Dialogue was founded in Montreal. In October 2023, Sun Life Financial — a Canadian-headquartered insurer — completed its purchase of a controlling stake, raising its ownership from approximately 23% to 95%. That's a controlling majority, not full ownership: a minority stake remained outstanding at closing, and we haven't independently confirmed whether that's changed since. Control now sits with a Canadian company, but with ownership below 100% and nothing confirmed past 2023, we mark Dialogue's Canadian-ownership status as unknown, not yes.

BenevityNot Canadian-owned

British investor Hg took a majority stake in Calgary's Benevity

Hg's investment was announced in December 2020 and closed January 15, 2021, after which Hg became the majority investor. Exact current percentage is not disclosed.

What this means for Canadian ownership

Calgary-based Benevity is majority-owned by Hg, a UK private equity firm, after a deal announced in December 2020 and completed on January 15, 2021. Hg's exact current ownership stake hasn't been publicly disclosed, and neither have the nationalities of the investors behind Hg's funds — so while we know control sits with a UK firm, we can't pin down the precise ownership percentage today.

Ownership timeline

CoolIT SystemsNot Canadian-owned

Calgary's CoolIT went from KKR control to US company Ecolab

KKR signed an agreement to acquire CoolIT Systems on May 1, 2023 (publicly announced May 3), with Mubadala co-investing. Mubadala's own legal counsel confirms the deal closed June 30, 2023. Ecolab completed its acquisition of CoolIT from that ownership group on July 2, 2026.

What this means for Canadian ownership

Calgary-based CoolIT Systems has changed hands twice in three years. In 2023, funds managed by global investment firm KKR, together with co-investor Mubadala, took majority control in a foreign-led investment. Then in July 2026, US public company Ecolab bought CoolIT outright from that ownership group. CoolIT's current owner is Ecolab, not KKR — the 2023 deal was a step along the way, not where things stand today. The company was built in Calgary, but control has sat outside Canada since 2023.

Ownership timeline

RONANot Canadian-owned

RONA changed American owners—without returning to Canadian ownership

Lowe's completed its RONA acquisition in 2016; Sycamore Partners completed its acquisition of Lowe's Canadian retail business in 2023. RONA confirmed Sycamore remained its owner in September 2026.

What this means for Canadian ownership

RONA was founded in Quebec and is still headquartered there, but founding and headquarters aren't the same as ownership. Lowe's, a US retailer, bought RONA in 2016; in 2023, Lowe's sold its Canadian retail business — RONA included — to Sycamore Partners, a US private equity firm, which RONA confirmed remains its owner as of September 2026. Being Canadian-founded and Canadian-headquartered doesn't change who controls the company today: that control has stayed in the US since 2016, so we classify RONA as not Canadian-owned.

Ownership timeline

  1. Share acquisition

Public RONA shareholders; no identified single controller → Lowe's Companies Inc.

    Announced February 3, 2016 · Completed May 20, 2016

    Completed

This transaction closed, with a confirmed completion date.

  2. Business divestiture

Lowe's Companies Inc. → Sycamore Partners-managed acquisition entities

    Announced November 3, 2022 · Completed February 3, 2023

    Completed

This transaction closed, with a confirmed completion date.

    Sources (3)

What remains unresolved

The investors behind Sycamore Partners' fund, including their home countries, haven't been publicly disclosed, so we can't independently confirm who ultimately controls it. And RONA operating "independently" of Lowe's since 2023 means it's no longer owned by Lowe's — not that it became Canadian-controlled.

TouchBistroCanadian ownership: unknown

TouchBistro joins Canadian Constellation Software's Harris group

Harris announced on July 7, 2026 that it acquired TouchBistro. No separate legal closing date is established; Harris is an operating group of Canadian-headquartered Constellation Software.

What this means for Canadian ownership

TouchBistro was acquired by Harris, an operating group of Constellation Software, a Canadian-headquartered software company. The deal was announced July 7, 2026, and both sides describe it as done — but neither has disclosed a separate closing date, so we can't say exactly when the transaction closed. A Canadian-headquartered buyer doesn't automatically mean confirmed Canadian ownership: without a fuller picture of who ultimately controls Constellation Software, we list TouchBistro's Canadian-ownership status as unknown rather than yes.

Ownership timeline

  1. Corporate acquisition

Prior private shareholders; no majority holder verified → Harris / Constellation Software Inc.

    Announced July 7, 2026

    Reported acquired

The buyer describes this as completed, but no separately confirmed closing date is available.

    Sources (2)

What remains unresolved

Harris and TouchBistro both describe this deal as done, but neither has disclosed the date it legally closed — so we're reporting this as a reported acquisition, not a confirmed completion date.

KoboNot Canadian-owned

Kobo began in Toronto. Japan's Rakuten bought it in 2012

Kobo was spun out of Indigo in 2009. Japanese company Rakuten completed its acquisition of all Kobo shares in January 2012 for US$315 million.

What this means for Canadian ownership

Kobo was founded in Toronto in 2009, spun out of Indigo. In January 2012, Japan's Rakuten completed its purchase of all Kobo shares for US$315 million. The name and the Toronto roots stayed; control of the company didn't. Kobo is a clean example of why being founded in Canada doesn't make a company Canadian-owned — it's been a Japanese-owned business for well over a decade.

Ownership timeline

  1. Share acquisition

Indigo Books & Music Inc. (Rakuten press release identifies it as majority shareholder) → Rakuten Inc. / Rakuten Group

    Announced November 9, 2011 · Completed January 11, 2012

    Completed

This transaction closed, with a confirmed completion date.

    Sources (3)

What remains unresolved

We haven't independently verified who held Kobo's shares before Rakuten's 2012 purchase, beyond what's been publicly reported. And having a presence in Toronto today doesn't make a company Canadian-owned — that comes down to who controls it.

ACANANot Canadian-owned

ACANA's Alberta roots survived Mars's acquisition—but ownership changed

US-based Mars Petcare bought Champion Petfoods, the corporate owner of ACANA and ORIJEN, in February 2023.

What this means for Canadian ownership

ACANA's kibble is still made at the same Alberta plant where the brand got its start. But ACANA isn't sold as a standalone company — it's one of two flagship brands, alongside ORIJEN, under Champion Petfoods. In February 2023, Mars Petcare, the US pet food giant, completed its purchase of Champion Petfoods outright. Where a product is made and who owns the company behind it are different questions: ACANA is still Alberta-made, but the company that owns it is now part of a US corporation.

Ownership timeline

  1. Corporate acquisition

Champion investor group led by Bedford Capital and HOOPP → Mars Petcare / Mars Incorporated

    Announced November 1, 2022 · Completed February 28, 2023

    Completed

This transaction closed, with a confirmed completion date.

    Sources (2)

What remains unresolved

ACANA wasn't bought on its own — Mars's 2023 purchase was a single deal for Champion Petfoods, the company that owns both ACANA and ORIJEN. Where a specific product is manufactured is a separate question from who owns the company that makes it.

The BrickCanadian ownership: unknown

The Brick joined Canadian rival Leon's in a 2013 acquisition

Leon's completed the acquisition of all The Brick's publicly traded shares through a plan of arrangement on March 28, 2013.

What this means for Canadian ownership

In 2013, The Brick — then a publicly traded Canadian retailer — was bought out by Leon's Furniture, another major Canadian furniture retailer, in an all-share deal. That's a Canadian company joining another Canadian company, not a move to foreign ownership. We still mark The Brick's Canadian-ownership status as unknown, but that's because Leon's is itself publicly traded and we can't independently verify the nationality of every shareholder standing behind it — not because of anything about this acquisition. Being bought out doesn't automatically mean going foreign.

Ownership timeline

  1. Share acquisition

Public The Brick shareholders → Leon's Furniture Limited

    Announced November 11, 2012 · Completed March 28, 2013

    Completed

This transaction closed, with a confirmed completion date.

    Sources (2)

What remains unresolved

Leon's is publicly traded, so we haven't independently verified the nationality of every shareholder behind it or exactly who ultimately controls it.
